Calif.) dropped out after losing 10-8 to Loyola (Los Angeles) and 10-7 to
Thousand Oaks to fall to 16-4. No. 13 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) lost
3-2 to Calvert Hall (Baltimore) and 5-4 to then-No. 11 Paul VI (Fairfax,
Va.) and 3-2 to DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) to fall to 14-6. No. 14 Plant
(Tampa) lost back-to-back games, 4-2 to Brandon, Fla., and 8-3 to Sickles
(Tampa).
1. Bishop Gorman, Las Vegas (29-1) Previous: 5. Results: Outscored last three opponents 63-13. In a 24-4 win vs. Durango (Las Vegas), John Rickard went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs and three RBI. Defeated Spring Valley (Las Vegas) 12-0 in five innings as Donn Roach held Spring Valley to four hits, and John and Joey Rickard each homered. 2. Sarasota, Fla. (23-2) Previous: 3. Results: Defeated Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton) 12-0 in five innings as Scooter Gennett and Blake Holliday hit home runs for the Sailors. Robin Rothenbach hit a two-run single as Sarasota defeated Riverview 5-4 in district tournament to guarantee a spot in the state tournament. 3. Brookwood, Snellville, Ga. (20-1) Previous: 7. Results: Has won 13 in a row and improved to 8-0 in its region with an 8-0 win vs. Grayson (Loganville). Also defeated Shiloh (Snellville) 6-0 as Jordan Erisman went 3-for-3 with two homers, and Matt Adams threw six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts. Played Parkview (Lilburn) on Wednesday. 4. American Heritage, Plantation, Fla. (24-2) Previous: 8. Results: Won past five games by 52-6 margin, including a six-inning 10-0 defeat of Pine Crest in the district tournament as Austin Yager went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. 5. Don Bosco Prep, Ramsey, N.J. (9-0) Previous: 9. Results: After their opening game, the Ironmen have not allowed more than one run in a game, including a 10-0 win at Cranford. Played Wednesday vs. Clifton. 6. Paul VI, Fairfax, Va. (19-0) Previous: 11. Results: Survived a 5-4 win against then-No. 13 St. John's (Washington D.C.) and 2-1 vs. St. Mary Ryken (Leonardtown, Md.) for coach Billy Emerson's 130th win at the school. Played O'Connell (Arlington) on Wednesday. 7. Plano West, Plano, Texas (28-0) Previous: 24. Results: Won two of past four games by shutout, defeating Wylie 10-0 and Allen 4-0. Harrison Holmes homered in a 6-1 win vs. Berkner (Richardson), helping the Wolves to go 14-0 in district play. Pitcher Drew Johnson is 8-0 with 2.28 earned run average, and Ben Flora is 8-0 with 1.69 ERA. Jason Coats is hitting .500 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. 8. Farragut, Knoxville, Tenn. (28-0) Previous: 25. Results: Defeated Siegel (Murfreesboro) 14-0 in five innings as Mac Thoreson threw three shutout innings and hit a grand slam. Defeated Bearden (Knoxville) 10-4 in four innings as Curt Powell, Michael Williams, Joey Delmonico and Nicky Delmonico all homered. Powell and Kentucky-bound catcher Williams are each hitting above .500. Defeated South Doyle (Knoxville) 11-1. Played Wednesday at William Blount (Maryville). 9. South Caldwell, Hudson, N.C. (17-1) Previous: 15. Results: Jimmy Messer threw a no-hitter, and Brad Chavis had a grand slam in a 13-0 five-inning win vs. Freedom (Morganton). Defeated McDowell (Marion) 12-2 as Chavis homered for the sixth time in his past four games and for the eighth time this season. 10. Park Vista, Lake Worth, Fla. (24-1) Previous: 17. Result: Peter Fusco went 3-for-3 with two RBI in an 11-0 win vs. Windsor, Conn., for 23rd win in a row. Played Wednesday in district opener vs. John I. Leonard (Lake Worth). 11. Socorro, El Paso (29-1) Previous: 18. Result: Only loss was a 4-3 defeat at Franklin (El Paso). Since then, have won four games by a 58-14 margin, including a 22-1 win at Bel Air (El Paso). 12. Reagan, San Antonio (28-2) Previous: 19. Result: Defeated Wagner (San Antonio) 17-5, BAC 4-1 and Smithson Valley (Spring Branch) 4-0 to win the Region 26-5A title. Casey Selsor had 15 strikeouts against Smithson Valley. 13. George Washington, New York (26-0) Previous: 20. Result: Fernando Frias went 2-for-4 with three RBI in a 10-2 win vs. Beacon, and Jampiere Santos had three RBI in a 12-0 win vs. Manhattan Science Center. 14. Riverside, Greer, S.C. (23-1) Previous: 21. Result: Held on to defeat Wade Hampton (Greenville) 9-8 to improve to 14-0 in the region. Michael Roth, a South Carolina signee, is 8-0 as a pitcher and hitting .448 with four homers. Furman recruit Will Owens is hitting .410 and has scored 33 runs. Center fielder Jordan Scott is hitting .369 and has scored 34 runs. 15. Harrison, Kennesaw, Ga. (20-1) Previous: 22. Result: Swept a doubleheader from Pope (Marietta) 8-3 and 10-4, defeated Campbell (Smyrna) 5-4 in 10 innings and topped McEachern (Powder Springs) 4-3. Avenged its only loss with a 9-3 win vs. Kennesaw Mountain (Kennesaw) as Jamal Austin went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases. 16. Creighton Prep, Omaha (22-1) Previous: 23. Result: Defeated North (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) 16-0 and South (Olathe, Kan.) 7-2. Lost 5-3 to Millard North (Omaha). Defeated Southwest (Lincoln) 10-7 and Papillion-La Vista (Papillion). Defeated Burke (Omaha) 10-2 as Josh Raburn threw 11 strikeouts. Played Millard South (Omaha) on Wednesday. 17. Owasso, Okla. (27-2) Previous: 1. Result: Bounced back from 8-3 and 4-3 losses to Broken Arrow with a 20-0 win vs. Pawhuska and a 8-2 win vs. Ponca City. Ryan Wilson struck out 10 against Ponca City. Defeated Union (Tulsa) 4-2 as Ryan Prickett struck out 10 and Austin Kirk hit his third homer of the year. Kirk threw a two-hitter in a 9-2 win vs. Sperry to improve to 5-0. 18. Tupelo, Miss. (25-2) Previous: 2. Result: Lost back-to-back games, 14-10 to Oxford and 6-5 to South Panola (Batesville). Will open playoffs against either Greenville or Madison Central on Friday. 19. Moody, Corpus Christi, Texas (26-3) Previous: 6. Result: Improved to 8-0 in region but suffered second loss to W.B. Ray (Corpus Christi), falling 1-0 despite 14 strikeouts by Moody pitcher Marc Gomez. Defeated Calhoun (Port Lavaca) 12-2. 20. Valley Christian, San Jose, Calif. (21-4) Previous: 4. Result: Bounced back from 16-1 loss to Junipero Serra (San Mateo) with 5-3 win vs. St. Francis (Mountain View) and 12-3 win vs. St. Francis. Lost 4-3 to De La Salle (Concord). Defeated Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 4-3 as Michael Reiling had three hits. 21. Orange Lutheran, Orange, Calif. (18-3) Previous: 12. Results: Defeated JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) twice, 4-0 and 4-2. Gerrit Cole struck out 10 in the 4-0 win. Split two games with Servite (Anaheim), winning 4-2 and losing 11-0. Played Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) on Wednesday. 22. Clearwater Central Catholic, Clearwater, Fla. (23-2) Previous: 16. Results: Defeated Cardinal Mooney (Sarasota), the fifth-ranked team in the state, 4-3 as Jon Zalud homered and Michael Heller was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Lost 10-9 to Florida Christian (Miami). Defeated Berkeley Prep (Tampa) 9-1 as Jimmy Dowdell hit a solo homer. 23. Seminole, Fla. (23-1) Previous: Not ranked. Results: Only loss was to Dunedin. Patrick Eckelbarger threw a five-hit shutout in a 6-0 win vs. Countryside (Clearwater). Nash Reling is 7-0 for the Warhawks. 24. Poteet, Mesquite, Texas (24-3) Previous: Not ranked. Results: Won District 10-4A championship with a 4-0 victory vs. Forney. The Pirates defeated Pearce (Richardson) 10-3 for their 12th win in a row. Brett Doe homered in the game. 25. Lake Orion, Mich. (9-0) Previous: Not ranked. Results: Defending state champion has won all of its games by seven runs or more.
