National High School Baseball Rankings as of March 31, 2008
By: Jon Mahoney and Matt Remsberg  4/2/08

The Anderson Bat National Classic did a number on the Top 25.

The Anderson Bat National Classic featured a loaded field of top teams and plenty of competitive games. However, it also helped knock a couple of teams from the national high school baseball rankings, including No. 3 Calvert Hall (Baltimore, Md.), which went 1-3 in the tourney.

However, the National Classic did allow for No. 8 Crespi to enter the rankings. Crespi won all four of its games, including a 7-2 victory over Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) in the finals.

Who do you think should be #1?

RANK // SCHOOL // LOCATION // RECORD // *PREVIOUS RANK

1. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) - (15-1) *1
The Patriots continued to roll with two wins last week, including a 19-2 mashing of Pine Crest. American Heritage hit five homers in the victory, including two by RISE's No. 3 senior prospect Eric Hosmer, who finished the game with four hits, four runs scored and two RBI.

2. Owasso (Owasso, Okla.) - (11-0) *4
With the score tied at 1 in the bottom of the seventh, Owasso junior outfielder Ryan Mayfield delivered the game-winning RBI single for the Rams in their 2-1 victory over Ozark (Mo.).

3. Tupelo (Tupelo, Miss.) - (19-0) *5
The Golden Wave picked up a key 5-3 win over a tough South Panola squad. Senior right-hander Nathan Flanagan (4-0) earned the victory on the bump and clubbed a two-run homer at the dish.

4. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) - (17-1) *2
The Gaels saw their perfect season go up in smoke with an 8-7 loss to Newbury Park (Newbury Park, Calif.) in the championship game of the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic. But there's no question Gorman remains among the nation's elite squads. Fourteen of its 18 games to this point have been against out-of-state competition, with two more scheduled against non-Nevada teams before beginning league play.

5. Moody (Corpus Christi, Texas) - (19-2) *6
Moody opened District 30-4A play last week with lopsided victories over both A.C. Jones (11-0) and Rockport-Fulton (12-1). Since dropping the first game of the Brenham Tournament to Georgetown in early March, the Trojans have outscored their next eight opponents 62-14.

6. Plant (Tampa, Fla.) - (17-1) *7
Junior shortstop/pitcher Mychal Givens scattered three hits and fanned 10 in six innings of work to help lead Plant to a 9-2 victory over Leto. The Panthers will face their toughest test of the season when they meet No. 18 Alonso at 7 p.m. EST on Friday.

7. Paul VI Catholic (Fairfax, Va.) - (9-0) *9
The Panthers captured the Southeastern Baseball Classic title with a 1-0 victory over host Hartsville (S.C.). Senior outfielder Peter Verdin's leadoff solo homer proved to be the only runs Tyler Costello would need as the sophomore right-hander tossed a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

8. Crespi (Encino, Calif.) - (10-3) *NR
No high school team in the nation had a better week on the diamond than Crespi, which recorded three of its four wins at the Anderson Bat National Classic against nationally ranked teams Jupiter (Fla.), St. John's (D.C.) and Orange Lutheran (Calif.). Crespi senior right-hander E.C. McSweeney tallied his fourth win of the season in a 7-2 victory over Lutheran in the finals.

9. Sarasota (Sarasota, Fla.) - (14-2) *12
The Sailors got back on track with a 14-3 victory over Plant City. Senior outfielder Robin Rothenbach paced the offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with four RBI.

10. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) - (0-0) *10
Don Bosco was scheduled to play its season opener against Montclair on Tuesday.

11. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) - (12-2) *15
The Lancers had won 11 consecutive games, including three at the Anderson Bat National Classic before falling to No. 8 Crespi, 7-2, in the Classic finals. Despite the loss, Lutheran actually moves up in the rankings after going 3-1 against a loaded field.

12. Socorro (El Paso, Texas) - (21-0) *13
After some time off for Spring Break, the Bulldogs get back at it this week with games against Bel Air, Montwood and Eastwood.

13. Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) - (12-1) *14
The Broncos won three games in two days last week, topping Mill Creek on Friday and then winning tight games over Hardaway and Columbus on Saturday. Senior outfielder Ryan Lewis led the charge in an 11-8 victory over Hardaway with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior catcher Seth Adkins swatted a two-run home run in the 6-5 triumph over Columbus.

14. Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, Fla.) - (14-1) *17
The Marauders topped Palm Harbor, 11-5, in their only game last week. Junior pitcher Zach Olson earned the win and improved to 5-0 on the year. Senior shortstop Sam Mende and junior outfielder James Dowdell each hit homers in the victory.

15. Plano West (Plano, Texas) - (19-1) *18
The Wolves went 5-0 in games decided by three runs or less in March, including a 1-0 victory over Wylie last week. Senior righty Drew Johnson came away with the win for Plano West.

16. Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) - (11-2) *19
The Griffins rebounded from their loss to Edison by topping Kennedy and St. Paul last week. Junior UC-Irvine bound left-hander Beau Wright tossed a no-hitter in the 5-0 win over St. Paul, striking out 13 and lowering his ERA to 0.69 for year.

17. Jupiter (Jupiter, Fla.) - (17-2) *21
Jupiter was one of the few nationally ranked teams to put up a good showing at the Anderson Bat National Classic last week, losing only to eventual champion Crespi (Encino, Calif.) in the first round. The Warriors rebounded to defeat James River (Midlothian, Va.), Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) and Aptos (Aptos, Calif.) to win the consolation championship.

18. Alonso (Tampa, Fla.) - (14-1) *22
The Ravens, winners of 11 straight, put that streak to the test on Friday night when they battle No. 6 Plant. Sophomore infielder Tyler Ding is batting .377 with five doubles, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases, while senior first baseman Nathan Hardin has six homers and senior infielder Sherman Johnson is hitting .514.

19. Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville, Ky.) - (4-0) *24
The Panthers opened fast with four wins in their first week of play. Junior designated hitter Taylor Banks made quite an impression in his first varsity game, going 3-for-3 with three doubles and four RBI in PRP's 5-4 win over Noblesville (Noblesville, Ind.).

20. St. John's (Washington, D.C.) - (6-2) *11
The Cadets went 2-2 in the Anderson Bat National Classic highlighted by a 9-4 victory over then-No. 25 Vista Murrieta (Calif.).

21. Patriot (Riverside, Calif.) - (15-0) *NR
The Warriors make their Top 25 debut thanks in large part to seniors Kyle Skipworth and Matt Lollis and junior Jessie Arreola. Skipworth, RISE's No. 6 senior prospect, set a state record last week as he produced hits in 18 straight at bats and also reached base in 25 consecutive at bats. He is currently hitting .654 with seven homers and 27 RBI. Lollis, a big-time pitching prospect who has only thrown nine innings thus far, is contributing at the plate with a .508 average, five homers, 12 doubles and 33 RBI. Arreola leads the team in innings and is 4-1 with 51 K's and a 2.52 ERA.

22. Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) - (15-1) *NR
The Patriots are the sixth Florida team in this week's Top 25 and are paced by hard-hitting first baseman D.J. Hicks, RISE's No. 45 senior prospect. Lake Brantley will have a chance to avenge its lone loss next week when it faces Lake Mary.

23. Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.) - (11-0) *NR
The Admirals are cruising to victory after victory so far this season, including an impressive showing at the Westminster Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in March. In its four wins that week, Farragut outscored opponents from the Virgin Islands, Alabama, North Carolina and Tennessee, 40-9. And in four wins since, the Admirals have surrendered just two runs. Leading the charge is senior pitcher/catcher Matt Ramsey, RISE's No. 38 senior prospect.

24. Long Beach Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) - (11-3-1) *16
Wilson struggled in the Anaheim Lions Tournament, losing to Lompoc, 9-5. The Bruins bounced back with an 8-7 victory over Dana Hills and a 13-1 win over Carson. Senior third baseman Zach Wilson went a combined 5-for-7 with four runs scored, a double, a triple and two RBI in the two victories.

25. Brother Rice (Chicago, Ill.) - (6-0) *NR
Illinois' top team tallied four wins last week capped by a 4-2 victory over Richards. Sophomore pitcher/shortstop Kevin Koziol had a strong week with a homer and four RBI in a 13-3 win over Harlan while earning the victory on the mound against Richards.

Dropped Out:

No. 3 Calvert Hall (Baltimore, Md.) - (5-3)
Tough week for the Cardinals, who went 1-3 in the Anderson Bat National Classic.

No. 8 Charlotte (Punta Gorda, Fla.) - (14-2)
It was a short stay for the Tarpons in the Top 25 as they went 1-2 last week.

No. 20 Florida Christian (Miami, Fla.) - (14-2)
We'll keep an eye on the Patriots in the weeks to come, but a loss to a mediocre Douglas team last week relegates them to the land of bubble teams.

No. 23 James River (Midlothian, Va.) - (4-2)
The Rapids may well navigate their way back into the Top 25 later this spring, but they drop out for now after going 2-2 in the Anderson Bat National Classic last week, with both wins coming against lesser teams.

No. 25 Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.) - (10-4)
Another casualty of the Anderson Bat National Classic, the Broncos went 2-2 at the event last week with no impressive wins.
