National High School Baseball Rankings as of May 5, 2008
By: Jon Mahoney and Matt Remsberg  5/5/08

The Sunshine State took a big hit in the national high school baseball rankings as No. 2 Sarasota, No. 15 Plant and No. 17 Seminole all had their seasons ended in their respective regional playoffs. Sarasota won last year's Class 6A state title.

But it wasn't all bad news for nationally ranked Florida teams since American Heritage was able to hold on to its No. 1 ranking. Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) and Brookwood (Ga.) follow the Patriots in the rankings.

Meanwhile, George Washington (N.Y.) makes its Top 25 debut at No. 25.

Who do you think should be #1?

Senior pitcher Eric Rice pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts as the Cobras edged Wellington, 2-0, in the Class 6A regional semifinals. Rice had previously two-hit Boca Raton in the district finals. Park Vista will meet Flanagan in the best-of-three regional finals this weekend.

6. Opelika (Opelika, Ala.) - (39-2) *6
The Bulldogs took two of three games against McGill-Toolen to win their Class 6A state quarterfinals best-of-three series. Opelika clinched the series with a dominating 18-0 win in five innings. Senior Mike Love paced the offense by going 4-for-4 with seven RBI. The Bulldogs will take on Prattville in the state semifinals this weekend.

7. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) - (33-2) *8
The Gaels, who have one game remaining in the regular season, handled Durango, 11-2, for their fourth consecutive win. Sophomore infielder Corey Lafler went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

8. Rowlett (Rowlett, Texas) - (29-1-2) *10
After losing the first game of its bi-district round series with Plano East, Rowlett kept its season alive with a 7-6 win in the second game and clinched the series with an 18-14 victory. Rowlett will play Tyler Lee in the area round this weekend.

9. Tupelo (Tupelo, Miss.) - (28-3) *13
The Golden Wave hold a 1-0 advantage over DeSoto Central in their best-of-three series in the Class 5A state quarterfinals. Tupelo picked up a 7-1 victory in Game 1 last Friday on the strength of a complete-game by junior pitcher Chris Stratton. The righty scattered eight hits, fanned six and added a two-run double at the plate to lead the way. Soggy field conditions forced the postponement of Game 2 of the series until May 5.

10. Moody (Corpus Christi, Texas) - (27-3) *14
The Trojans earned a bye in the bi-district round of the Texas Class 4A tournament last week. They will play Alice in a one-game playoff on May 8 for the right to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

13. Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, Fla.) - (27-2) *19
The Marauders advanced to the Florida Class 3A regional finals by topping Cardinal Mooney (6-2) and Bishop Verot (12-0) in the first two rounds of the regional tournament. The Panthers were edged by St. John's, 3-2, but they bounced back with wins over Good Counsel (9-8) and Gonzaga (11-0). Paul VI, which clinched the WCAC regular season title, is the top seed in this week's WCAC tournament, which the Panthers won last year.

16. Owasso (Owasso, Okla.) - (31-3) *21
After ending the regular season with three losses in the final two weeks of April, Owasso stormed to a regional championship with three easy wins last week. 18. Crespi (Encino, Calif.) - (20-5) *22
The Celts won a home-and-home series with Alemany last week, edging the Warriors 6-5 and 5-3. Senior Ryan Hawthorne paced Crespi in the 5-3 triumph, pitching three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and also going 2-for-4 at the dish with a run scored. The Knights enter their season-ending two-game showdown with No. 18 Crespi on a roll, having won their last 11 games. Notre Dame added two more victories last week, topping Chaminade by scores of 5-2 and 8-7. The Knights were late-inning magicians last week. They won the 5-2 affair in the 10th inning, then needed a four-run rally in the seventh to tie Chaminade at 7 before scratching across the winning run in the first extra frame of the 8-7 triumph.

21. Harrison (Kennesaw, Ga.) - (25-1) *25
The Hoyas clinched the Region 5-AAAAA title with a 7-0 win over Marietta, one of their three victories in the final week of the regular season. After the Hoyas allowed a pair of runs in the top of the 10th, they rebounded and scored three of their in the bottom of the inning to close the regular season on a triumphant note.

24. Lake Orion (Lake Orion, Mich.) - (16-1) *20
The Dragons suffered their first defeat of the spring, dropping the second game of a double header against Novi, 7-5, on Saturday.
